IN SPITE OF combined security operations during Carnaval there was a final death toll of 17 dead, most of them resulting from traffic accidents,

 José Donderis, national director of the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), said that there were more than 80 permanent security control points in cueleco areas  and there were no incidents within those areas.
“People who were killed included  five drowned through  not obeying safety standards and exposing hemselves with reckless behavior, and similarly 12 traffic accidents  occured because people did not comply with the security measures” he said.

An air and sea  search is still underway for three fishermen whose boat disappeared in the Azuero region on Sunday.
